The Gap Theory
This view has also been known as the Ruin Reconstruction Theory. This theory teaches that there was a long period of time between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. The Gap Theory was proposed in 1814 by Thomas Chalmers (1780 1847), a leading Scottish theologian. Some geologists of his day had argued that the earth was much older than the Genesis account implied. Therefore, Chalmers, proposed a gap in Genesis to harmonize with the demands of contemporary geologists.
Before people like James Hutton and Charles Lyell came along and wrote their theories about the past, the Biblical and scientific world were in harmony concerning “Origin Science”. They taught that everything about our ancient past could be explained in the biblical record of 6-7000 years.
The Gap Theory became popular because of men like C.F. Scofield, J. Vernon Magee and others. These men were greatly used of God and no doubt led many to the Lord, but at the time of Scofield, the only theory that seemed to answer what the scientific world was saying was the Gap Theory.
Unfortunately, the scientific community was being deceived by a handful of men, some of whom were not even scientists. Their theories were never challenged, but accepted blindly by mixing a little truth with bad theories. When Darwin took his journey to South America on the ship the Beagle, he tried to explain what we now call the Geologic Strata Column, simply by denying the World Wide Flood. Everything on the earth, like the fossil record, can be explained within the biblical timeline. In fact, the only thing that can explain the fossil record is a Global Flood. For example:
If you saw an animal on the side of the road that was hit by a car and was left there to rot, it would start to decay. Other animals would feed off of it, and the ants would be next, and finally in a couple of weeks, because of the oxidation process, the animal would become dust. What we see in the fossil record is not so. We see billions of animals, preserved in rock, that indicate that these animals were trapped in gigantic mudflows caused by a catastrophic event in our past. Dinosaur bones as well as other animals cannot petrify unless sediments quickly cover them. This is good science not fantasy.
Let us not forget what evolutionists said at the beginning of the 20th century. They said that it was bigotry if you only teach one theory. They were willing to allow the students to choose, by being taught both sides. When creationists were finding facts that were undermining the theory of evolution, evolutionists said that creation should no longer allowed to be taught in the schools.
When Charles Lyell studied Niagara Falls, the evidence showed that the break up of the Falls was consistent with a flood 4500 years ago. The evidence did not fit the theory that he had in mind. He published that the falls were formed over 35,000 years ago, not millions of years, but thousands. This was just enough to go beyond the biblical timeframe of 6,000 years. No one ever challenged his findings.
When all these so called proofs were published, their intent was to attack Christianity. That is why people like Thomas Chalmers came up with The Gap Theory. Today, with all of our technology and the things we have been able to discover, there is less evidence of evolution than there was in Darwin’s day. He had no evidence, only theories. Remember that Darwin’s book Origin of the Species promoted racism. Historians say that what Hitler did to the Jews was only consistent with the belief he had in Darwin. In our Evidence for a Young Universe tract, there is plenty of evidence to indicate that the earth, as well as the universe, is as old as the Biblical record.
Let’s examine the Gap Theory, a little closer. According to the theory, there was a creation and a pre-Adamic race was established. Possibly, cave men, dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals existed. When Lucifer rebelled in heaven (Isaiah 14), there was a flood that destroyed everything on the earth. This is referred to as Lucifer’s flood. Then eons of time passed and the earth was recreated starting in Genesis 1:2 .
If we look at the scriptures, we see that Lucifer probably did not fall until after creation week. At the end of the sixth day, God deemed everything He created very good (Genesis 1:31). It can be assumed that God included the angels in this statement. Before Chalmers time, no one ever proposed a gap in the creation account of Genesis.
Another problem with this theory is that it promotes death before Adam. The Bible clearly demonstrates that sin did not enter the world until after the fall of man in Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned .
Today, there are people such as Hugh Ross, who claim to defend the Bible and have been on radio shows such as Focus on the Family which promote:
• The earth and universe are billions of years old.
• The flood of Noah was a local and not a global event.
• Death and bloodshed had been in existence before Adam
In regard to the text of scripture, it is taught in such study Bibles as Scofield Reference Bible, that the term “without form and void” is the “result of judgment indicating chaos”. However, this term is translated in the Hebrew as unformed and unfilled, others contend that in Genesis 1:28 where God tells Adam and Eve to replenish the earth, the word “replenish” implies to repopulate. The actual rendering of the word simply means to fill. If A person researches something, that does not mean he has searched it before.
Most importantly, all the evidence that people display, which teaches the earth and the Universe are billions of years old, can either be explained in a young universe or that part of their proof is based on assumptions.
One of the problems we face today in America is our education system. There is nothing wrong with learning and preparing for the future as long as the foundation is right.
In Luke 6:47, Jesus said “Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built a house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built a house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.”
The majority of our educational system is teaching the wrong foundation. When we see people coming out of college, are they focused toward building their life on a foundation that lasts forever or have they been caught up in the system? For Example: The Bible teaches that if a man’s house is not in order how can he take care of the house of God.?
Some of the most successful people and their families are broken. Their children are living separate lives. Another tragedy is when people who call themselves Christians have left their first love. Are they committed to living by the principals taught by our Savior? Are Biblical principals the foundation of their thinking in all areas of life?
Are we letting our light so shine before men that they may glorify our Father in heaven or do we love the things and philosophies of the world?
• Is Christ revealed in the principals that we practice in our work?
• Do we have the hearts of our husbands, wives and children?
• Do the people that know us the best see Christ in our lives?
Maybe you are reading this article and you don’t know where you will spend eternity? Let us help you with that by saying …
How does anyone get to heaven?
First realize that they cannot get to heaven on their own merits. The Bible says that “For all have sinned and come short (that means everybody can’t get to Heaven on their own) of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)
Jesus Christ (who is the Son of the living God) came to earth and was born of a virgin woman (therefore he was not born of the curse of mankind) he lived a sinless life and died on a cross for all the sins in the world. Three days later, God the Father raised Him from the dead. He was seen of 500 witnesses and returned to heaven. God’s word says that if we believe these things and call upon the Lord, we will be saved. Romans 10:9 - 13
