The Ozone “Hole” Controversy

“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe”.          Proverbs 29:27

In the late 1980”s Environmentalists announced to the public that a hole was discovered over Antarctica. They claimed that the hole was caused by a worldwide depletion of the ozone layer and that a higher increase in UV radiation was on the rise. The Ozone lies in the upper Stratosphere between 27-33 miles in the atmosphere. It was placed there to protect the earth from the harmful Ultra violent, Gamma and X-rays that are emitted from the sun. They reported that the cause of this was from man-made chemicals called Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) such as Freon and Halon. They also reported that when CFC’s reach the upper atmosphere, they are broken down into chlorine and other chemicals that decrease the Ozone and increase oxygen. These environmentalists called for a ban on CFC or millions of people would die from the increase of UV rays. As a result, world powers such as the United States and Great Britain signed the Montreal-London Protocol, which called for the elimination of all CFC production by the year 2000. Is there a real danger in the “Hole” over Antarctica? Is there any danger of the Ozone depleting and destroying the earth?

Dr. Gordon Dobson discovered the hole in 1956 before CFC’s became an issue. Scientists who studied this concluded that it was a natural phenomenon that appeared annually near the end of winter and would last about five weeks. It would then vanish with the onset of spring. This is probably due to the fact that the sun replenishes the ozone.
This hole is only found in the South Polar Region. It was concluded that the hole was caused by an Antarctic high altitude weather phenomenon called the Polar Vortex. This hole appears and disappears with the vortex. This vortex does not occur in the North Polar Region and neither has any hole ever been detected.
The Ozone hole is actually not a hole but a thinning. The lowest concentration of the hole was about 30% of the normal level. If there was any place on the earth where a thinning would be safe, Antarctica is the spot. At present, the average ozone levels are higher now than they were in the 1960’s. Even though CFC’s production reached its maximum in the mid 70’s the levels were lower than they are now.

What causes the most depletion of the ozone?

The most man could ever produce of CFC in one year would only contribute about 750,000 tons of chlorine per year. The oceans alone produce over 600,000,000 tons of chlorine into the atmosphere per year (mostly from sea salt). Mt Erebus in Antarctica has been pumping over 350,000 tons of chlorine into the atmosphere since 1972. The amount of chlorine that was produced by the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 was more than what man could produce in a lifetime. The fact is that the Ozone varies due to weather and solar activity. Ozone levels also fluctuate year by year from 20 – 40% without anything being done by man. We are responsible to be good stewards of our planet, but let’s make decisions that are not based on panic, but on good science.

What about Global warming?

Again environmentalists began to warn that mankind was producing more carbon dioxide (CO2) than nature could absorb. They claimed that the rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere would enhance the greenhouse effect, thus raising temperatures around the world. They predicted that this would cause:
 Melting ice at the poles
 The expansion of heated seawater would raise levels several feet.
 Scorching heat and severe drought would turn much farmland into deserts
 That the earth would become uninhabitable First of all CO2 is a common byproduct of several natural and artificial processes. The following are a few that produces it:
 People (breathing)
 Decaying vegetation
 Burning of oil and coal
 Hot springs
 Volcanoes

Nature contributes about 200 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere yearly, while man produces about 7 billion tons yearly. It is removed by:
 Plants
 Trees
 Ocean plankton
 Coal and other natural chemical processes.
A closer look at the issue shows lack of evidence for a global crisis. Predictions of the dangers are based on theory alone. Some politicians have used this false crisis to promote global authority at the expense of national sovereignty (the right of a nation to run its affairs as it pleases).

What does History Indicate?

All the scientific evidence available indicates there is no danger of a global warming. The earth’s average temperatures do fluctuate over long-term cycles. For example: from 900 AD to 1100 AD, a period scientist refers to as the “Medieval Climate Optimum”, global temperatures were warmer on average than at present. The weather was so mild that the Vikings established colonies and farms in Greenland. In the 1300’s, however, global temperatures began to drop plunging the world into the “Little Ice Age”. The Vikings’ crops and livestock in Greenland began to fail, the Vikings left, and Greenland was covered with ice. About 1850, the earth’s climate began to gradually warm ending the Little Ice Age; this warming lasted until 1940.
Finally, man’s contribution of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses is less than natures.
 Man contributes 7 Billion tons of CO2 that is released into the atmosphere.
 Nature produces over 200 billion tons of CO2 Its nature (God) not man that controls the environment, and any other thinking can and will cause panic.

A Christian’s Approach

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.                                                                                        Revelation 19:11-16

God’s word tells us that it is because of sin in the world not environmental issues that are the destroying our world. History has shown us through such examples as Egypt, Greece, and Rome of the wickedness that destroyed these and other empires. If moral issues are the key, then we as Christians should be addressing this problem. In our own country every problem we have can be traced to a violation of God’s principals that he gave every nation to follow.

Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.  Proverbs 14:34

This and other things show that the Bible is the Word of God. God loves each and every one of us, that he made a way for every person on the planet to get to heaven. Here are the instructions

First realize that they cannot get to heaven on their own merits. The Bible says that “For all have sinned and come short (that means everybody can’t get to Heaven on their own) of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)

Jesus Christ (who is the Son of the living God) came to earth and was born of a virgin woman (therefore he was not born of the curse of mankind) he lived a sinless life and died on a cross for all the sins in the world. Three days later, God the Father raised Him from the dead. He was seen of 500 witnesses and returned to heaven. God’s word says that if we believe these things and call upon the Lord, we will be saved. Romans 10:9 - 13
